How to use it
Two modes, switched with the toggle at the top. “Add tax” starts with a price that does not yet include tax: type it in, set the rate, and the tax amount and final total update as you go. “From total” flips the question around: you already have a number that includes tax, on a receipt or a checkout screen, and want to split it back into the pre-tax price and the tax portion. That reverse calculation is easy to get wrong by hand, since it is not the price minus the tax rate: dividing the total by one plus the rate is the only way to land on the correct pre-tax figure.
Set the rate with the slider, type an exact figure into the field next to it, or tap one of the quick-rate chips (5%, 7%, 8.5%, 10%) if one of those matches your local rate. The bar underneath turns the split into a picture: indigo for the pre-tax amount, amber for the tax. Your last rate is remembered, since most people check the same local rate over and over. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate sales tax on a price?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate, then add that to the price. A $50 item at 8% tax adds $4.00 in tax for a $54.00 total. That is exactly what the “Add tax” mode above does live as you type.
How do I find the tax on a total that already includes it?
Divide the total by one plus the tax rate to get the pre-tax price, then subtract that from the total to get the tax. For a $107 total at 7% tax, the pre-tax price is $107 / 1.07, which is $100, so the tax was $7. Subtracting the rate directly from the total gives the wrong answer, which is the mistake the “From total” mode above avoids.
Can I calculate sales tax online without installing an app?
Yes. The calculator on this page works in any phone or laptop browser, needs no account, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded. Your last rate is saved in your browser’s local storage on your device only.
Are the results exact?
Treat them as a close estimate for the rate you enter. Actual sales tax varies by state, county, and city, and some places tax certain goods differently or not at all. Check the rate for your specific location and item category before relying on the number for a business filing.
