Snake.io and its many mobile clones turned that Nokia-era loop into a modern download, but the core idea never needed an app in the first place. How to play
Your trail moves on its own in whatever direction it is currently heading. On desktop, steer with the arrow keys or WASD. On a phone, swipe in the direction you want to go or tap the on-screen pad in the corner of the play area. Eat the glowing amber node to grow one segment longer and add a point to your score. Run into the wall, one of the slate crystals scattered around the grid, or your own trail, and the run ends immediately.
The grid ramps up gradually: it is slow and forgiving for the first several nodes, then keeps speeding up so the mistakes get sharper the longer you last. The crystal layout is generated from today’s date, so everyone who plays gets the exact same board. Your best score and day streak are saved on your device. Nothing leaves your browser.
How it compares to Snake.io
Coilrun keeps what actually makes this genre work: continuous movement, one-cell-at-a-time growth, instant restarts, and a difficulty curve that punishes hesitation, not luck. A run lasts well within the 30 to 90 second range that makes “one more try” so easy to say yes to, and our daily layout means a friend’s score today is a fair comparison against yours.
We left plenty out on purpose. Snake.io’s multiplayer arenas, other players’ trails to cut off, skins, and its leaderboard economy are the product, and we made no attempt to copy any of it. Coilrun is single-player only, with its own flat, dark grid and a small set of static crystal obstacles instead of a crowd of rival snakes. There is no progression system, no cosmetics, and no server to connect to.
So when should you install the real thing? If you want to play against other people in real time, or you want the unlockable skins and events that come with ongoing updates, Snake.io is the obvious next step. Coilrun is the two-minute version for whenever you want the loop without the app.

No. Coilrun is an original game we built, inspired by the classic snake mechanic that Snake.io and dozens of other apps share. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Amelos Interactive in any way. All art and sound in our version are original work, and the download links above point to the official app.
Is it free?
Completely. There are no ads, no in-app purchases, no accounts, and no data collection. Your best score and day streak live in your browser’s local storage and never get sent anywhere.
Does it work offline?
Once the page has loaded, the game makes no further network requests, so it keeps running through connection drops. For online multiplayer against other players, you need Snake.io itself, which requires a live connection.
Why is the crystal layout the same every run today?
The layout is generated from today’s date, so everyone in the world plays the same board on the same day. That makes scores comparable: if a friend scored 24 today, you are dodging the exact same crystals they were. A new layout arrives at midnight, which is also how your day streak grows.
