Splitwise app feature graphic showing shared expense tracking

Splitwise is the app most groups reach for when a dinner, a weekend trip, or a shared flat turns into a tangle of “who paid what”. It is genuinely good at that job. But settling one bill should not require everyone to create an account, and the free tier now caps how many expenses you can add per day and shows ads unless you pay for Splitwise Pro. So we built Tab Tally: a free split bill calculator that runs right here in your browser. No install, no signup, no daily cap.

Split a bill now

Add your people, add your expenses, and the settlement list updates as you type. It opens with a sample bill so you can see how it works.

How to use it

Type a name and tap Add to build your group, up to 10 people. Then tap “Add expense” for each cost: a description, the amount, who paid, and who it should be split between. You can split equally or assign custom shares, and each expense takes an optional tip percentage and tax amount, which is handy for restaurant bills.

The “Settle up” section does the real work. It nets out every debt and shows the smallest set of payments that clears the whole bill, so three people do not send each other six transfers. Pick your currency symbol from the dropdown, and use “Copy summary” to paste a clean breakdown into your group chat. Everything is saved on your device only. Nothing leaves your browser, and “Start over” wipes it whenever you want.

How it compares to Splitwise

We should be straight about what this is. Tab Tally settles tonight’s bill; Splitwise manages your financial life with other people. The full app keeps persistent groups for flatmates and recurring trips, syncs balances across everyone’s phones, sends reminders, handles currency conversion, and connects to payment services so you can settle inside the app. A browser calculator does none of that, on purpose.

What we kept is the part most people actually need at the table: multiple expenses, uneven splits, tip and tax, and a simplified “who pays whom” answer. What we dropped is accounts, sync, and history. Your data lives in one browser on one device, so this is the wrong tool for tracking a household over months.

Our honest advice: use Tab Tally when a group needs an answer in the next two minutes and half of them will never install anything. Get Splitwise when the same people share costs week after week, because a running balance you can trust is worth an account, and that is the job Splitwise still does better than anyone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Splitwise free?

Splitwise is free to download and use, with limits. The free tier shows ads and caps the number of expenses you can add per day. Splitwise Pro is a paid subscription that removes the ads and daily limit and adds extras like receipt scanning and currency conversion. Tab Tally, the calculator on this page, is completely free with no caps.

Can I split a bill online without installing Splitwise?

Yes. The calculator above handles the common case: several people, several expenses, tip and tax, uneven shares, and a minimal list of who pays whom. It works on any phone or laptop browser and nobody in your group needs an account.

Does the calculator work offline?

Once this page has loaded, the calculator runs entirely in your browser and keeps working without a connection. Your people, expenses, and currency choice are saved in your browser’s local storage on your device, so they are still there when you come back.

Is this the real Splitwise?

No. Tab Tally is an original tool we built, inspired by the expense-splitting problem Splitwise solves. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Splitwise, Inc. in any way. If you want persistent groups, sync, reminders, and payment integrations, get the official app from the stores above.
