Terraria key art showing a 2D side-view world of blocks, caves, and biomes

Terraria has held people for fifteen years on one simple hook: dig a little further, and something worth having is usually just past the next block. We couldn’t fit a decade of bosses and biomes into a browser tab, but we could build the part that hooks people first. So we built Underlight, a small side-view mining game with real torchlight, a day-night cycle, and a new mine generated every day. It loads instantly below, no install and no account.

Tap or click to start digging, and place a torch before you go too far into the dark. Best played with sound on.

How to play

On phones, use the arrow buttons to walk and the jump button to hop over gaps, then tap any lit block within reach to mine it. Switch to build mode to place dirt, stone, planks, or a torch from the palette at the bottom. On desktop, walk with A/D or the arrow keys, jump with Space, left-click to mine, and right-click to build; press Q to flip modes and 1-4 to pick a hotbar item.

The goal is depth: dig straight down or carve tunnels, and your depth record climbs as you go. Torches are unlimited, so lighting your route costs nothing but a tap, and the cave only gets darker the deeper you push. Every player gets the same seeded mine each day, so today’s ore veins and lava pockets are identical for everyone. Your dig, your inventory, and your best depth are all saved in your browser’s local storage, and nothing leaves your device.

How it compares to Terraria

Underlight keeps the single mechanic that makes Terraria’s opening hours so sticky: swing at a block, watch it disappear, and decide whether to keep going down or build back up toward daylight. The torch-and-darkness push and the ore-glinting-in-the-wall moment are both here, along with a real day-night cycle that dims the surface and a bit of lava you have to work around instead of just falling into.

What it drops is almost everything that makes Terraria a 500-hour game. There’s no crafting tree, no NPCs, no biomes beyond one procedurally generated cave, no bosses, no multiplayer, and no progression beyond your own depth record. We built this as a fifteen-minute taste of the loop, not a demo of the game.

If digging one more layer down already has you hooked, that’s the tell. The full game hands you hundreds of item recipes, a dozen distinct biomes, boss fights that gate real gear upgrades, and four-player co-op, none of which fits in an iframe. Underlight is the itch; Terraria is the scratch.

FAQ

Can I play Terraria in a browser?

Not the actual game. Terraria itself only runs through its official Android, iOS, Steam, or console releases. Underlight, the game on this page, is our own original browser game inspired by Terraria’s mining and building loop, and it runs on any phone or desktop with no install.

Is this the real Terraria?

No. Underlight is not affiliated with Re-Logic or 505 Games. It’s a small original game we built to capture the “dig one more layer” feeling in a form you can try instantly, with its own name, art, and code.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, yes. The game itself makes no network calls during play, and your progress is stored locally in your browser rather than on a server, so a dropped connection won’t interrupt a run.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no signup, no ads, and no in-game purchases. Terraria itself is a one-time paid purchase on every platform it ships on.

Why is my best depth reset if I clear my browser data?

Your depth record, ore count, and dig progress are all saved in your browser’s local storage rather than an account, which is what keeps the game private and offline-friendly. Clearing site data or switching browsers starts a fresh save.
