How to play
You get a rack of seven letter tiles and a shared 15x15 board. Tap a tile, then tap a square to place it, tap a placed tile again to pull it back, and hit Recall to clear the whole move at once. Every word you play needs to be real (checked against a built-in dictionary), lined up in one row or column, and, after your opening move, connected to a tile that’s already on the board. Land on a colored square with a fresh tile and you earn a letter or word bonus; use all seven tiles in one turn and you get a full-rack bonus on top.
Play alternates with the rival automatically, and it takes a few seconds to “think” before answering. Stuck with a bad rack? Shuffle reorders your tiles, and Swap lets you trade tiles for new ones from the bag instead of playing a word. The tile bag itself is generated fresh from today’s date, so everyone who opens the page today draws the same 100 tiles in the same order. Your best score and day streak are saved on this device — nothing leaves your browser.
How it compares to Words With Friends
Tile Duel keeps the part of the loop that makes the real game worth opening: a shared board, bonus squares that reward planning ahead, and a rival that has to actually find a legal word before it can move, not just drop random letters. The daily tile bag mirrors the “everyone gets the same puzzle” hook that daily word games run on, and the scoring — letter values, double and triple squares, a bonus for emptying your rack in one turn — works the same way it does in any serious word-tile game.
What’s missing is everything that turns a word game into a social platform: no Facebook friends list, no chat, no multiple simultaneous games, no push notifications nudging you back in, and no account needed to keep a streak. Is this the real Words With Friends?
No. Tile Duel is an original game we built, and it shares only the idea: a rack of letter tiles, a shared bonus board, and turn-based scoring. All of its code, board layout, and dictionary are our own. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Zynga or Words With Friends.
Does the rival actually play real words, or is it random?
It plays real words. The rival searches every open square on the board against a dictionary of common English words, checks that its rack can actually supply the letters, and only makes a move once it finds one that scores. You can even set it to “Sharp” for its strongest play or “Casual” for a friendlier, more forgiving opponent.
Is Tile Duel free?
Completely. No ads, no accounts, no purchases. It’s one page that loads once and keeps working even if your connection drops.
Where are my best score and streak stored?
In your browser’s local storage, on your device. We don’t run accounts or sync to a server, so your stats never leave your browser. Clearing your browsing data resets them.
Do I get new tiles every day?
Yes. The tile bag is shuffled from today’s date, so it changes at midnight and everyone draws the same 100 tiles in the same order that day. Play a full match to keep your streak going, then come back tomorrow for a new bag.
