Paint by Number: Coloring Game promotional artwork showing numbered pixel pictures being filled with color

Paint by Number: Coloring Game has a simple pull: every cell carries a number, you pick the matching color, and a picture slowly appears out of a faint grid. It is one of the calmest ways to spend ten minutes on a phone. We built Tintwork to run that same loop right here on the page. It is free, needs no install and asks for no signup. Tap a number and you are coloring.

Play Tintwork now

Pick a color at the bottom, then tap a cell with that number. Drag to fill several regions in one stroke.

How to play

Choose a swatch from the strip under the picture. Every unfilled cell with that number lights up, and tapping one fills its whole patch of matching cells. Drag across the picture to fill several patches at once. When a color runs out, the game moves you to the next one.

Tapped the wrong patch? Nothing is lost. The picture shakes a little and tells you which number it wanted. The Hint button pulses a patch of your current color and scrolls to it, Undo steps back one stroke, and pinch or the zoom buttons get you close to small details. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys, Space to fill and the number keys to switch colors. Sound is off until you turn it on.

Fourteen hand-made pictures live in the Library. The Daily picture is generated from today’s date, so everyone gets the same one, and finishing it each day grows your streak. Your progress, gallery and streak are saved on your device. Nothing leaves your browser.

How it compares to Paint by Number: Coloring Game

Tintwork keeps the loop that makes the app work. You match numbers to colors, watch a picture resolve, and finish with a small flourish. Sessions run a few minutes, wrong taps cost nothing, and the hint and zoom tools are there for the fiddly parts. We added one hook of our own, the daily picture, because a shared puzzle is a good reason to come back tomorrow.

What we left out is the catalogue. The Android app is built around a large, regularly growing library of images, with finer detail and more ways to customize how you play. Tintwork has 14 pictures and one new daily picture, drawn by code on a small grid, so the results are charming rather than photographic. There are no accounts, no unlockable packs and no sharing of finished art beyond the result button.

If you finish the library and want more, or you like coloring detailed artwork on a long commute, the full app is the better home for that. For a quick round with nothing to install, play here. We also compared several apps in this genre in our coloring app alternatives roundup. If you enjoy building pictures cell by cell, try our browser pixel art editor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play a color-by-number game in my browser?

Yes. Tintwork runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to install, and you can start coloring the moment the page loads. It also keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

Is this the real Paint by Number: Coloring Game?

No. Tintwork is an original game we built, inspired by the number-matching loop of Paint by Number: Coloring Game. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the app’s publisher. The download links above point to the official app.

Is it free, and does it save my progress?

It is completely free, with no ads, accounts or purchases. Your unfinished pictures, finished gallery and daily streak are stored in your browser’s local storage on your own device. Clearing your site data will reset them.

What is the daily picture?

Each day the game generates a fresh picture from the date: a mandala, a landscape or a butterfly. Everyone who opens Tintwork that day gets the same one. Finish it and your streak goes up by one. Miss a day and the streak starts over.
