Everyone has held a Rubik’s Cube and put it down half-solved. The puzzle is simple to describe and hard to finish: twist a layer, watch six faces fall apart, try to bring them back. We wanted that feeling without a phone install or a plastic cube, so we built Twist Lab, a real 3D cube that runs right here on this page. It is free, needs no signup, and works with a finger, a mouse or a keyboard.

Play Twist Lab now

Tap Scramble, then drag any face of the cube to turn that layer. Sound is off by default.

How to play

Drag a sticker along the face you want to turn. Drag the empty space around the cube to look at it from another side. If you prefer buttons, the turn pad under the cube has all six faces, each with a clockwise and a counterclockwise version. On a keyboard, press U, D, L, R, F or B for the top, bottom, left, right, front and back layers, and add Shift to turn the other way. The arrow keys rotate your view.

The clock starts on your first turn, and the move counter tracks every quarter turn. Solve all six faces and you see your time, your moves and how far you are from your best. The Daily mode gives everyone the same 20-move scramble for that date, so you can compare notes with friends, and finishing it keeps your streak alive. Random mode gives you a fresh scramble every time, and a 2x2 option is there when you want a quicker round.

Your best times and streak are saved on your device. Nothing leaves your browser.

How it compares to Rubik's Cube

Twist Lab keeps the part that makes the original work: a cube you can turn in your hands, six colors, and the slow satisfaction of a face coming back together. Turns animate smoothly, the cube has real depth and lighting, and every scramble is built from legal moves, so a solution always exists.

What we left out is most of the craft around it. There is no guided tutorial, no algorithm trainer, no hint system, no cube skins and no leaderboard. Other sizes and speedcubing timers with inspection time are not here either. The game is also quarter turns only, which makes a solve longer than it would be with half turns, but it keeps the controls simple on a phone.

If you want to learn a full method step by step, or you like collecting cube styles and comparing your times with other players, an app built for that is a better fit. Twist Lab is the version you can open in a spare minute and play at once.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play a Rubik's Cube in a browser?

Yes. Twist Lab, the game on this page, is a 3D cube puzzle that runs in any modern browser with WebGL, on a phone or a desktop. You turn layers by dragging, tapping the on-screen buttons or using the keyboard.

Is this the real Rubik's Cube?

No. Twist Lab is an original game we built, inspired by the classic twisting-cube puzzle. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the owner of the Rubik’s Cube trademark or the publisher of any cube app. All of the graphics and sound are generated by our own code.

Is it free?

Yes. There are no ads, no purchases and no account. Your best times and streak stay in your browser’s local storage and are never sent anywhere.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, the game makes no further network requests, so it keeps running if your connection drops. For a cube app from a store, check its listing for connection requirements.

What is the daily scramble?

It is a 20-move scramble generated from today’s date, so everyone who plays Daily mode gets the same starting cube. Solve it to extend your streak. A new one appears the next day, and Random mode is always available for extra practice.
