Time Calculator app feature graphic for adding and subtracting hours and minutes

Time Calculator by Critical Data Technologies does the arithmetic that spreadsheets make awkward: adding hours and minutes, subtracting a break, and turning 7h 45m into 7.75 for a timesheet. That job does not need an install. So we built Hours Desk, a free time card calculator that runs right here in your browser. Fill in a week of shifts or stack up durations and the totals update as you type.

Use Hours Desk now

It opens with a typical week already filled in: Monday to Thursday from 9:00 to 17:30, a shorter Friday, and a 30-minute unpaid break each day. Change any start, end, or break and the weekly total, the pay estimate, and the bar chart move with it.

How to use it

On the Timesheet tab, set a start time, an end time, and an unpaid break for each day. Use the plus and minus buttons to nudge a time by 15 minutes, or type the time directly. A shift that ends earlier than it starts, such as 22:00 to 06:00, is counted as an overnight shift. Switch a day off with its toggle and it drops out of the total.

Below the days, enter an hourly rate, the number of hours after which overtime starts (40 by default), and the overtime multiplier. The page shows regular hours, overtime hours, and an estimated gross pay. You can also round each day to the nearest 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes if your employer does.

The Add or subtract tab is for plain durations. Type entries like 1:30, tap the sign button to add or subtract each one, and read the running total in hours and minutes, decimal hours, and days.

For a reason to come back, the page compares this week with last week. Your hours stay in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and you can wipe the week with Reset week.

This is an estimate tool for your own records. It is not payroll software and it is not legal or tax advice, so check your official pay stub and local overtime rules.

How it compares to Time Calculator

Hours Desk keeps the core of what Time Calculator is used for: type some times, get a total, convert it to decimals. We added a week grid with overtime and a pay estimate, because that is what people searching for a time card calculator are usually after.

What we left out is everything that needs an account or a bigger app: saved history, exports, multiple jobs, and widgets. The web version remembers your current week and nothing else.

Our honest advice: use Hours Desk when you need to total a pay period in a minute, especially on a shared computer or someone else’s phone. Install the app when you add and subtract durations every day and want the calculator one tap away on your home screen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked on a time card?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. For example, 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours. Hours Desk does this for each day, adds up the week, and shows the total as hours and minutes and as decimal hours.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. A total of 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75. The calculator shows the decimal total beside the h:mm total, rounded to two places.

How does the calculator handle overnight shifts?

If the end time is earlier than the start time, it assumes the shift ends the next day. A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 with a 30-minute break comes to 7 hours 30 minutes. If start and end are identical, the day counts as zero hours.

Is this free, and does it work offline?

Yes, it is free with no signup. After the page loads it keeps working without a connection, and your hours, rate, and settings are saved in your browser’s local storage on your device only.

Is this the official Time Calculator app?

No. Hours Desk is an original tool we built, inspired by the problem Time Calculator solves. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Critical Data Technologies, and its results are estimates, not payroll or legal advice. If you want the full app, get it from the stores above.
